When I talk about clean eating I mean every single thing you put into
your body, not only food. As a personal trainer there is something we
see time and time again. You get a new client who is dedicated to making
a change. They turn up on time and they go hard in their workouts. But
at the end of the agreed period you just know they haven’t quite reached
their full potential. Usually this isn’t down to their dedication in
the gym, you watch them and they do the work. The problem is after they
leave your session. Their biggest downfall then is what they put into
their bodies.
You need to imagine your body like a car. It needs
fuel not only to do its job, but to run to its full potential. I mean
think of it this way, if you decide you want a brand new Ferrari, you
need to work hard to achieve that goal. But the first thing you do when
you get it off the tarmac is not going to be putting diesel in a petrol
engine! Because that beautiful new Ferrari of yours won’t be able to
work to its fullest potential. The same thing goes for your body.
Moreover,
let’s forget for one second I am even talking about working out here.
In general life watching what goes into your body is imperative. Your
body is always regenerating itself. Your skin, hair nails all change.
Where do these things come from? What you put in your mouth. Your food
is fuel to regenerate your cells, in other words, you genuinely are what
you eat. So if you treat your body like a wastebasket, that’s what it
will look and feel like.
What About Food?
The only way to eat clean
is to control what food you eat from the preparation, to cooking to
eating. Nowadays life is hectic and sometimes eating on the go is
unavoidable. The only problem is when you eat outside you are making
assumptions that the food you are about to eat is prepared and cooked at
the standard you set for yourself at home. But is that always the case?
I mean, how do you really know if the surfaces they cut your food on
were clean? Or if they washed your vegetables before they cut them? Were
they contaminated by any other products while they were being prepared?
The truth is you just don’t know. As someone with a nut allergy, these
are issues I always have to consider when eating outside. I have to be
extra careful and think about issues others may not even give a second
thought. But do you want your food prepared by someone who you don’t
even know if they washed their hands first? With a bit of forward
planning, you can prepare meals which are completely nutritious.
Also
in regards to food you need to consider what goes into the meals you
make. First off, I’m not one of these people who are going to tell you
that everything must be super organic. I don’t think your drinking water
needs sourced from the Himalayan peaks, carried down by angels in
buckets of pure 36 carat gold! But, you do need to think a bit harder
about what you put into your meals.
Cooking is now easy with so
many products which are easy to use and readily available. There are an
abundance of sauces in jars and vegetables in tins that are quick and
convenient. But have you ever took the time to read the ingredients on
those products? Chances are there will be a list of ingredients and some
you don’t even know what they are! Do you want to put something into
your body when you don’t know what it is. Plus what is a pasta sauce
really? You can put fresh tomatoes in a mixer with an onion, garlic and
some herbs and there you go, fresh pasta sauce! One you can eat knowing
exactly what is in it.
